A giant in the music business, Lou Pearlman was a record producer who managed the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC, among other boy bands, in the 1990s. He also happened to be a fraudster.

Pearlman, like Bernie Madoff, ran a long-standing Ponzi scheme and pled guilty to conspiracy, money laundering, and making false statements during a bankruptcy hearing. He was subsequently sentenced to 25 years in prison. Pearlman, who died of cardiac arrest while in custody in 2016, also was accused of molesting some of the young musicians that he managed, though he was never charged.
